Here’s a garagy tune i’ve been producing for my cousin, Vonesvonic. We’ve done it over the period of a few months, primarily recording in an attic in the North of England - then recording new elements down in London, also working via Skype and such to keep working remotely. Its a real mixture, and has been a bit of an upward struggle to compose (lots of revisions to keep is as simple and focused as possible). It’s all done in Ableton Live, with lots of Guitar Rig 3.
My cousin Will does vocals, beatbox, guitar, bass and we share credit on claps. I put it together.

Robert Silvers, editor of the New York Review of Books
Robert Silvers talks about a new book from writer, naturalist and co-founder of The Paris Review, Peter Matthiessen. It´s called Shadow Country and revolves around the real-life, although somewhat mythological, figure of Edgar J. Watson. Plus a man whose writing is an adjunct to his view of the world and his philanthropic ambitions—George Soros is a billionaire who sees making money as having meaning only when it can make positive changes in the world around him.
Zacharey Jane and the sense of self
Washing up on a remote shore without memory, without a past and with nothing but a stranger for company—that’s the fate of two characters in The Lifeboat, a new book from novelist Zacharey Jane. The Lifeboat asks whether we are who we are because of our accumulated experiences, or is there some intrinsic core that defines us?

A sad/angry song about the place where all the things we’d rather forget end up. Inspired by MeFi politics filter, where I was first introduced to the concept of “the memory hole,” which in turn gave rise to this song. (This is a redux post after I accidentally posted an old mix before.) Also, this poem by ee cummings was tumbling around somewhere in my big mostly empty head when I wrote this.
Lyrics: They’ll drown you out / They’ll cover you with white noise / until the signal’s blotted out. / They’ll wash you down the memory hole / leave you spinning round and round. / ‘Cause you whistle-blowers need to learn / to keep your mouths shut. / And you teenage mothers need to learn / to keep your mouths shut. / Or there’s someone who’ll be glad / to shut them for you / and then make it look like an accident. / They’ll drown you out / no matter how loud you might try to shout. / They’ll drag you down, / make you slap yourself in your own face, like a clown. / ‘Cause you whistle-blowers need to learn / to keep your mouths shut. / And you teenage mothers need to learn / to keep your mouths shut. / Or there’s someone who’ll be glad / to shut them for you / and then make it look like an accident. / Om mani padme hum, om mani padme hum, om mani padme hum… / But you whistle-blowers need to learn / to keep your mouths shut. / And you teenage mothers need to learn / to keep your mouths shut. / And you union workers need to learn / to keep your mouths shut. / Or there’s someone who’ll be glad / to shut them for you / and then make it look like an accident.

Poetic anarchy: Pi O
Pi O is a man who calls himself an urban poet — a poet of cafes and coffee shops, of time and space with poems of numbers and poems of fragments, with poetry of the postmodern, premodern and most modern — and above all an anarchist poet.

This week we’ll explore the edge of the world. A point on the horizon that marks the end of what is known and all that lies beyond. It’s a gray, ill-defined area that defies the usual measurements. Making concerted efforts to try this week are The Uberkids, The Artificial Sea, Monotronaut, Dive Index, onkgusD, Stabilizer and Schev. I’m Jim Nye.
